The valley that’s only been open five years.

Miyar was effectively sealed off most of the year until the Atal Tunnel opened in 2020 — before that, Rohtang cut the only road for months at a stretch. That’s probably the honest reason it barely appears on a Himachal itinerary yet, and exactly why it’s on ours. Past Khanjer, the last village a car can reach, the ground opens into wide glacial grassland, streams braiding and rejoining all the way up to Menthosa, the peak that sits over the whole route like it’s keeping an eye on things.

A little further on, near a hamlet called Yolling, a Buddhist stupa and a Hindu shrine stand a few metres apart — we’re told plenty of people here answer to two names, one from each tradition. It’s the kind of detail no listing photo would show you, and exactly the kind we exist to write down. What we still don’t know is whether any home along this route can host a guest properly, in a valley that only really lives for about four months a year. That’s the real question behind this one — not the view, which we already believe, but the welcome.
